Saving the World One Town at a Time!

About

In March 2020 I became a Grandma. It was the most rewarding and heartbreaking time. Like so many people, lockdown stole my grandsons early months from me. Video calls were priceless but not enough. Rather than focusing on not being able to see him, I became obsessed thinking about things I could do for him. I recorded myself reading stories to be played to him, so he knew my voice, and would know, when the time came to meet in person, that I was a source of love and comfort. But what else could I do for him?

While scrolling through social media, I saw it was full of posts on wildlife enjoying the planet with us humans locked away. It made a nice change from the usual posts showing starving polar bears walking on melted ice caps, extreme floods, soaring heatwaves and other nasty effects of climate change. I couldn’t stop thinking about this while, on my permitted daily exercise, a walk around the Munden Woods. The walk was beautiful. I could hear the birds singing, squirrels were running around in the trees. The blossoms were starting to appear and I wondered how much of this would still be here when my grandson is older. That’s when the idea hit me! I wanted to do all I could to combat the climate crisis and make the environment a better place for my grandson.

The extra time lockdown gave us, helped me focus on repurposing and reusing items that would usually go to waste. Like everyone else, I had to become more creative with ingredients, due to shortages, but it also made me think more about edible produce I’d usually throw in the bin.

I knew I wanted to reduce my waste in general, but I must admit it wasn’t until March 2022, when introduced to the team of Feeding Our Future, that I found out how big an impact food waste has on the environment. I was shocked to learn that food waste contributes to about 10% of global greenhouse gases? That’s only 1% less than cars and buses!

It was over the next few month, attending some of the great workshops and events hosted by Feeding Our Future, that the idea for this blog was formed - you can find details of future events by clicking into our Events Page.

In this blog we will be exploring ways to Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and (only when all else fails) Recycle. Thinking of new ways to look at our buying habits, great leftover recipes, creative ideas using packaging and even ways to reduce our energy use.

I believe, here in Watford, we can make a real difference in reducing waste and show the rest of the country how it’s done!

Come on you Watfordians, join me in my journey to reduce waste in Watford.

We Would just like to say a massive thank you Feeding Our Future for highlighting the issues and giving us this opportunity to create this blog. Together I know we can make a difference.

With heartfelt thanks from
